Katie Akkerman, LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor

Katie Akkerman, LPC, is a licensed professional counselor.  She holds a Master’s degree from Lakeland University and a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Stevens-Point.  Her areas of practice include anxiety (with an interest in obsessive compulsive disorder), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, life adjustments, coping with grief and chronic pain/illness.

Katie is trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), an evidence-based treatment for individuals with symptoms of PTSD. This therapy consists of 12 weekly sessions and will involve homework that the client completes outside of session. Homework is meant to help client examine their thoughts and feelings related to the trauma they experienced. CPT is a semi structured approach to facilitate the healing process.

Along with CPT, Katie utilizes Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Solutions Focused Brief Therapy.  Music, writing/journaling, books, art etc. are often incorporated into her therapy. Katie offers a supportive environment, and when indicated, a direct approach. Katie strongly encourages clients to play an active role in their therapy and welcomes an open and honest discussion about the therapeutic process so she can tailor treatment for each client.
